Design Approach
“But ’tis a common proof, / That lowliness is young ambition’s ladder.”
UMW Theatre's production of Julius Caesar focused on the themes of ambition and the aquisition of power. Through the play, we see Brutus and Cassius conspire to change the world: a goal that ultimately isn't successful. Upon the gender-bent casting of two women as Brutus and Cassius, the team reflected that this world contained more of a granite wall than a glass ceiling. From this image of a large, imposing, imoveable structure, the concept for this production was born.
