THEATRE DESIGN

Examples of Student Work:

These images represent a sampling of the student-created scene designs from both my 100-level Principles of Theatre Design course and my 400-level Scene Design course. Neither class has a pre-requisite, and both contain a mixture of students taking a Gen-Ed credit alongside departmental majors. (The design assignment itself is similar in both courses, the main difference between the levels lies in the amount of documentation materials the student is asked to create to complete their design package.)

Images of student work is presented alongside their written concepts.

Course Overview

My Scene Painting course is a technical skills course that teaches students to replicate painting for the stage. Because this is a Gen Ed course as well as a departmental elective, I get a variety of students from skilled theatre artists to students exploring a new skill set.

My approach to this class is to focus on teaching the student to learn how to connect what they see on a paint elevation to the marks that they're making on a panel. Throughout the semester, we focus on several common techniques; from brick to drapery to hand lettering, and beyond. Each assignment focuses on color theory, color matching, and knowing which mark to use to replicate a given technique. Below are some samples of their work - the project technique is listed on each photo.

Course Overview

Making Miniatures was a model-making course where students recreated scale buildings, while focusing on the craft rather than the concept. These images show two main projects. For the first project, student chose a storefront to recreate. (Options included a famous Art Nouveau building in Brussels, Rose Apothecary, Bob's Burgers, or Ollivander's Wand shop.) For the second project, they recreated one of the Thorne Rooms from the exhibit in the Chicago Institute of Art.

Course Overview
Theatre Crafts is The University of Mary Washington's version of a Props Class. In this class, we focused less on designing and more on recreating an object that you see. For each project, students had to source a reference image, then work to figure out what materials they would need to recreate that item.
