Design Approach
“My mind, once filled with dreams of beauty, is a furnace of revenge!”
The scenic design for Frankenstein approached the proscenium theatre a little differently. We flipped the space, seating the audience onstage and surrounding the performance area, which allowed us to use the fly system to create a wall of fabric for the final confrontation in the Arctic. The world was intentionally textured, gritty, and minimalist, relying on raw materials and theatrical mechanics rather than realistic scenery. Shadow play was used during Victor’s experiments, allowing the creation of his creatures to remain partially obscured while building tension and leaving the most unsettling details to the audience’s imagination. Together, these elements created a stark, exposed world where the mechanics of both the theatre and Victor’s experiments were never entirely hidden.
