Design Approach
“I draw cartoons, and I need real things to draw from, ’cause I don’t trust memory.”
Fun Home explores writer Alison Bechdel's complicated memories of her childhood, from her relationship with her father, through college love, and into adulthood.
For this production, we treated this world as a memory play where Alison is actively present in each scene as she remembers and effectively combs her memory for details. The design centers on a turntable that is broken up into different vignettes; as the turntable revolves, we follow her through her family home, the funeral parlor, her college dorm, and other notable locations from her past. Behind it, the looming structure of her father's beloved Victorian home frames the stage.
