Design Approach
"We can build a beautiful city, yes we can..."
The central conversation around the scenic design for Godspell was about creating a world where people could come together. The director wanted the characters to feel like fellow audience members who had gathered for a performance and found themselves creating a community. The set needed to be both thematically flexible and a playground for the actors as they retold the parables and proverbs. The final design landed in the world of an M.C. Escher drawing, using stairs, arches, and unexpected levels to create a space for movement, discovery, and play.
