Design Approach
"The play is memory: being a memory play, it is dimly lighted, it is sentimental, it is not realistic.”
The Glass Menagerie is a memory play in which Tom looks back on a specific moment in his family’s life. To emphasize his presence as both narrator and participant, the stage wraps around the Wingfields’ tenement home, allowing Tom to move through and observe each scene; even those he seemingly wasn’t present for. The design also reflects Amanda’s determination to maintain appearances despite the family’s financial circumstances. Exposed plaster lath reveals the deterioration of the apartment, while a delicate floral wallpaper pattern spreads across its surface, softening the decay and suggesting Amanda’s attempt to create beauty within a world that is slowly falling apart.
