Design Approach
"There’s no such thing as the West anymore”
This approach to the scenic design for The Pitmen Painters focuses on the work of the real-life Ashington Group and the world in which that work was created. The classroom is grounded in a simple, realistic environment, while enlarged versions of the men’s paintings surround and tower over the space. By placing their artwork at the center of the visual world, the design celebrates both the lives these men lived and the remarkable paintings that were created as they sought to understand what "art" is.
