Design Approach
"Playing games keeps one sane, when the stakes involved threaten to drive one MAD.”
Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is playful, irreverent, and fast-paced, connecting the realities of social expectations in Regency England with current realities in the contemporary world. Love and marriage are often treated like a game, even though the choices the characters make have very real consequences.
Our team was interested in how the characters create and present different versions of themselves. To reflect this, the scenic design draws from paper theatres and makes the theatrical world visible. Rigging, backstage spaces, and other normally hidden elements become part of the scenery, while architectural details are flattened into illustrated cutouts. The result is a playful, flexible world where appearances can change as quickly as the characters do.
