Design Approach
"There’s no such thing as the West anymore”
The scenic design for True West is grounded in the realism of a 1960s California home. Mid-century architecture influenced the clean lines, angle of the ceiling unit, and overall shape of the kitchen. Styling choices came from the idea that Austin and Lee's mother would have decorated with a mix of new and old items, likely bring along keepsakes from her past.
Because Shepherd uses her as a stabilizing force, her aesthetic drives the calm and orderly world that we first encounter. As the brothers compete, trade roles, and slowly unravel, they also begin to destroy the carefully controlled world around them. The scenery gives us a realistic, ordered place to begin, making its eventual chaos all the more visible.
