Design Approach
"The likes of us are wretched in this world and the next.”
Franz Woyzeck does not live a charmed life. A soldier at the mercy of nearly everyone around him, he is used and discarded by his doctor, his commanding officer, and eventually his wife. Our director envisioned a world where power was visually represented through height. While the costumes used stilts to alter the actors’ physical stature, the scenic design used levels to create shifting relationships of power. The production was staged in a tennis-court configuration, with one end of the playing space sinking into the stage and the other rising above it. As the characters moved through the space, their positions continually changed their relationship to one another, allowing power to shift visually throughout the production.
